Addiction to Alcohol - Alcohol dependancy

Expert: Beverley Glazer - 6/22/2009

Question
My husband says he wants to quit drinking. I'm all for it! He says that AA won't help though because his body has become so dependant on alcohol that he has to go straight to rehab for detox. Can you be so addicted to alcohol that quiting cold turkey can be dangerous for your health? I would love some information that I can show him to support your answer if possible. Thank you ever so much! -Ivy-

Answer
Hi Ivy,

You're husband may be right. He probably feels the withdrawal symptoms and they can be very frightening.

There are many treatments available for addiction:

http://www.untwist-your-thinking.com/treatment-available.html The most important thing is that he have follow-up after rehab, to stay on track.

If your husband has so much alcohol in his system, that when he slows down he starts to shake, he has to be detoxed to get the alcohol out of his system. This should be under the supervision of a medical professional.

Detox is often done before rehab, unless the rehab has a detox facility as well.

I hope your husband makes the decision to quit drinking, because his addiction is extremely dangerous and it's slowly killing him.

I hope this information is helpful.
Thank you for asking All Experts

Best of luck to both of you

Bev
