Addiction to Alcohol - teenage drinking/personality change

Expert: Jurriaan Plesman, Nutritional Psychologist - 6/12/2009

Question
My best friend started drinking about 3 weeks ago.  She is 18 and we've just
graduated from high school. We both stayed away from alcohol for all of high
school, however, she recently felt the urge to start. Over the past 3 weeks she
has been drinking every 3-4 days and she has transformed into a completely
different person.  She is no longer acting rationally, she blatantly ended her 4
year friendship with me over a boy, and she does not seem to care.  She is
making very poor decisions all around, such as getting rides from people who
are drunk. I understand that people make lifestyle changes, but it seems as
though she has entirely changed her personality.  I have spoken with other
people, who all agree that her personality change is both present, and not
good.  I was wondering if there is someway that it is alcohol that is doing this
to her.

Answer
Hi Marie Rose,

It is of course difficult to say from a distance what is happening. But the fact that she is using alcohol seems to indicate that she is medicating herself against some stress. It could be due to some factors as explained in the following articles.

and ask to be referred to a Nutritional Doctor, Clinical Nutritionist or Nutritional Psychologist.
