Question
Is there a reason my nausea and stomach pain are worse in the morning than later in the afternoon?

Answer
Hello Tera,

Thank you for your question.

Tera, it’s your body’s way of telling it can’t take any more alcohol.  First reason being large amounts of alcohol can be toxic to the body (for example, the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, or nervous systems). Second reason is due to inflammation of the stomach lining (called gastritis) - alcohol is toxic to the lining of the stomach and regular heavy drinkers often get stomach pains and vomiting due to this damage. Unhealthy eating and fatigue is also one of the reasons.  When you wake up in the morning, after a heavy bout of drinking, the body needs to get rid of the excess amount of liquid in the body.  Since alcohol is toxic to the body it irritates the stomach lining & the esophagus.  Alcohol is a depressant, and, in large amounts, dulls the nerves that regulate one's breathing, heartbeat, and gag reflex. The gag reflex is what is responsible for allowing our bodies to vomit — to get rid of extra alcohol that it cannot process.  It is also one of body’s defense mechanisms. Strictly speaking, your body makes you sick in an effort to protect to you from the toxic chemical. Alcohol poisoning is the reason for nausea and vomiting.  In severe cases of alcohol poisoning a person becomes unconscious and go into coma.

Tera, if you are having regular symptoms of nausea and vomiting you need to see a doctor immediately.  These symptoms occur in alcoholics and alcoholism is a disease and cannot be cured.  It can only be arrested by total abstinence.

Tera, I hope you get well and sober soon. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

God bless

Amarnath
