Addiction to Alcohol/Can a beer drinker be a alcoholic

Question
My husband drinks 12 plus beers every night. He dosen't miss work, physically abuse, etc. Although he can get pretty mean verbally/emotionally when he cannot perform- blaming it on my weight gain and not the beer. Granted I have put on some weight lately but am far from obese. Can too much beer cause the inability to complete sex? I think he is a alcoholic but a friend once told me that if a person only drinks beer, they cannot be considered a alcoholic.  Is this true?

Hi Donna,

To answer your questions: Alcohol is alcohol and beer contains alcohol. You can be an alcoholic and only drink beer. Your husband has a high tolerance to alcohol so he can consume and awful lot, (and 12+ beers every night is a lot). He is damaging his health as well as his relationship.

Here is a self test that you can give him, or you can answer the questions from what you already know:

Don't let him blame your weight gain on his sexual performance, because his inability to perform stems from his drinking - not you.

I hope this information is helpful,

CommentThanks for explaining. I was thinking along the same lines, but when I was told that if he only drinks beer he couldn't be an alcoholic, I was wondering if there was any truth behind it. Thanks for your time and expertise.
