Addiction to Alcohol/Intervention for a sick mother

Question
Hello,
My mother has a severe drinking problem. It has finally gotten to the point where my family members agree with me and are ready to do what it takes to get her help.
However, I have read that staging interventions without the help of a professional can backfire. I called an intervention specialist and they told me that they charge a non-refundable $3500.00 fee. This is well beyond our means.
So my question to you is: do you have any advice on how to stage an intervention without the aid of a professional?
Thanks for your time!

Answer

Beverley Glazer MA., I
Hi Jane,

An intervention can backfire, with or without a specialist. Family interventions are done all the time.

The timing has to be right and there are certain techniques and strategies that work better than others.  Background information must be gathered and other issues should be discussed as well.

Your question is too complex to be answered in a letter, because every intervention is similar, but not same.

Expertise

I can answer questions on all addictive behaviors: alcohol, drugs, food, compulsive sex, codependency, gambling, compulsive shoplifting etc.

Experience

I have over 20 years experience working in the addiction field. My experience extends to all levels of substance abuse. I've worked in rehabs and detox centers, prisons and half-way houses and have a busy private practice as well as an active website where I can be reached for recovery coaching and consultation. I am a cognitive behavioral therapist, but 12-step programs are an excellent support. When working in the addiction field, there is no cookie-cutter solution. In the recovery field, you witness miracles. That's why I love what I do.
