Question
my brother is in rehab right now. He did a medical detox after having a seizure from not drinking about 24 hrs. His therapist wants him to go to a sober house. He is refusing. He says he will go to out patient therapy and his A A meetings. He has been drinking for over 20 yrs. I want to believe he can do this Many people think he can't come home and do this. He needs a sober house for 6-9 months. What are your thoughts  Is it possible for a person to go to out patient and AA meetings and continue his sobriety.  Thank You  An alcoholics sister

Answer
HI lisa,

If he has been drinking for 20 years, it means he has never been treated for his alcoholism. I could agree that the best way to detox is in a specially medically supervised detoxification facility. But once detoxed does not mean he is treated for his alcoholism. You need to treat the causes of alcoholism or addiction. In order to treat alcoholism or addiction you need to understand the underlying biochemical mechanism to drive people to be come addicted. Depending on your brother's motivation he should be able to treat himself with perhaps the help of a nutritional doctor.   Please read:

The first step in treatment is going on a hypoglycemic diet. If problems persist, it is best to consult a Nutritional Doctor, Clinical Nutritionist or a Nutritional Psychologist.
