Addiction to Alcohol/sugar addiction relating to alcoholism

Question
My question concerns my 22 year old daughter.  She is a recovering alcoholic who just earned her three year chip in AA.  She is bi-polar and currently takes lithium and lamictal.  She has successfully quit smoking 5 months ago.  She attends college and works 25 hours a week.  Over a three year period, she has gained about 30 pounds, roughly 10 pounds per year.  She tries to diet and exercise, but ultimately reverts back to bingeing on high sugar sweets.  In high school she would binge and purge, but no longer purges.  She has just recently "confessed" her behavior to her family and sponsor.  She wants to make positive changes.  I have read some about the sugar/alcohol connection.  Could you reccommend anything that would helpful to her?  Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer
Dear Sarah,

Alcoholism, depression, Bipolar Disorder, tendency to become obese, eating disorders, sugar addiction all have one disease in common, and that is hypoglycemia or pre-diabetic or diabetic insulin resistance.  Fortunately, this can be treated without recourse to drugs by adopting the hypoglycaemic or diabetic diet.
