Hi Pam,

To answer your question -- no you are not destined to drink, but it's a long road and the struggle is hardest in the beginning.

Drinking was a major part of your life and it's not there any more.

It's not enough to stop drinking. You must also fill your life with positive people and new activities that don't revolve around drink. Many people join a gym or play sports to fill the gap, others do volunteer work or an activity that they always wanted to do. Just don't be hard on yourself. Reinventing your new life takes time.

Keep going to meetings and get comfortable in the rooms. Being a part of the community is as important as choosing a sponsor. You'll choose a sponser when you feel you're ready.

I hope this information is helpful,

Experience

I have over 20 years experience working in the addiction field. My experience extends to all levels of substance abuse. I've worked in rehabs and detox centers, prisons and half-way houses and have a busy private practice as well as an active website where I can be reached for recovery coaching and consultation. I am a cognitive behavioral therapist, but 12-step programs are an excellent support. When working in the addiction field, there is no cookie-cutter solution. In the recovery field, you witness miracles. That's why I love what I do.
