Hi Elaine,

Why would your boyfriend hate you and never speak to you? Getting help for his drinking may be the best thing that ever happened, because he was killing himself with alcohol.

Going to detox and meetings will keep him on the sober path, so encourage him to keep it up. It's also important that you don't enable him.

Here's some information on that: http://www.untwist-your-thinking.com/enabling-behavior.html

AA is for him, however, you would be helped by Alanon. These meetings are for families of alcoholic/addicts and you'll not only get an understanding of alcoholism,  but the members will provide you with support when you need it. You can probably find a meeting in your area.

I hope this information is helpful,

I have over 20 years experience working in the addiction field. My experience extends to all levels of substance abuse. I've worked in rehabs and detox centers, prisons and half-way houses and have a busy private practice as well as an active website where I can be reached for recovery coaching and consultation. I am a cognitive behavioral therapist, but 12-step programs are an excellent support. When working in the addiction field, there is no cookie-cutter solution. In the recovery field, you witness miracles. That's why I love what I do.
