Answer
Dear Roswhitha

The only way, I know, for overcoming addiction to alcohol and or other addictive substances is by way of a change in one's diet.

Most people with an addiction problems are found to be hypoglycemic (http://www.hypoglycemia.asn.au/2011/what-is-hypoglycemia/,) which causes the over-production of stress hormones. These form the symptoms of mood disorders over which you would not have conscious control.
This can be treated by going on a Hypoglycemic Diet (http://www.hypoglycemia.asn.au/2011/the-hypoglycemic-diet/)

I suggest that he adopt the hypoglycemic diet and if things don't improve he see a nutritional doctor or counselor to discuss these articles.
