Question
My councelor once told me that a person can not have a good relationship with an alcoholic.  Why is that?

Answer
Dear Linda

I assume you mean an active alcoholic. It is possible to have a good relationship with a recovering alcoholic. The reason you can't have a good relationship with an active alcoholic is that alcohol will always be the most important thing in their lives.
