Addiction to Drugs/Lortab addiction

Question
QUESTION: What exactly does lortab do to the body?  Does it destroy the liver?
My boyfriend is addicted to lortabs due to back and shoulder injuries.
I still believe he has pain, but I do believe it is mixed with
addiction.  If he continues taking lortabs, how will it harm him in the long
run?  Anytime I mention something, he always has an excuse, like his
uncle has to take them for the rest of his life.  I would like to be able
to tell him the damages it can do, but I can not find the information on
the web.  All it says is to get off them, no site tells what permenant
damages it does to the body.  Thanks.

ANSWER: Tara,

Loratab is basically hydrocodone/vicodin just stronger somewhat. It is narcotic and Acetaminophen which is Tylenol and as you probably have seen in advertisements, taking Tylenol over a long period time with consistency can cause problems with the liver. When Pain meds are not taken properly it can cause Hep C due to the liver damage in some cases. The liver is where everything is broke down and it is in charge of getting rid of the waste in the body but when it doesn't function like it should it will cause jaundice, yellowing of the eyes, water retention, kidney problems and other side effects as well. He should also be aware of the fact that pain killers are downers which suppress and slow down the functions of the body. How much does he take daily? How long has he been on them all together?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: He has been taking them on and off for about 4 years I'm guessing.  We've been together for 2.5 years and I think he was only off them for 6 months.  He takes 2-4 a day.  Thank you so much for your answer.

Tara

Answer
So this time how long has he been on them without taking a break and how does he do when he is not on them? He doesn't take a lot but over a long period of time it becomes a lot for the body because it slows down and starts to have problems digesting things regularly,it causes constipation and weight gain as well. You are very welcome.
