Addiction to Drugs/percocet addiction

Question
I have been taking percocet for about 2 years, and I am tired of living like this. I do at times have valid prescriptions, but not for nearly as many as I take. I am up to about 10 10/325 per day, and I freak out when I dont have any. I want to know how to detox myself at home. Another part of the question is that I notice when I dont take the percocet my breathing is restricted. Is that part of this problem? I am a smoker, but for some reason I breath much better when on the meds. Currently I am drinking about 6 beers a day as well. Will it be safe for me to stop on my own?

Answer
Hi Jen,

I would alway suggest that people get medical assistance if they can, with withdrawal.  It is importnat though, that that medical help is free from judgement.  At the very least I would suggest that you get a check up from a medical practitioner who you trust.  Are you in a major city?  If you don't know anyone, I might be able to link you in with someone who could refer you to an appropriate doctor.  If it was just about coming off the tablets, I would think you would probably be fine, but the breaking difficulties are a concern.  Opiates can act as cough suppressants, but it is worth checking that you don't have a lung problem.  Also, 6 beers a day isn't monumental, but it is a fair bit, and could complicate the process.

Let me know if you are happy to go to get medical help, and if you need someone to lead you in the right direction.  Otherwise, get back to me and I could perhaps come up with a reduction regime (but only if you at least get a check up).

Good luck and whatever you do, stay safe!
