Question i have a wonderful step-daughter that has a year old baby and she is involved with a young man that has a herion addition.in the last week he has lost his job,spent all money,wrecked thier only vehicle and had to get care flighted to hospital,there he was treated and released.he does admit that he has a problem,but says that he can kick the habit without any professional help. he also wants to move in with us with step-daughter and baby.we really do love this young man and want the best for all involved, but don't feel that he could do this without outside help.....this has been an ongoing problem for years. thankyou for you concern and answer.........

This is difficult situation because heroin addiction as with all addiction is difficult to treat. The first is that he needs to be motivated to withdraw from drugs. My advice is that he enters a medically supervised detox rehab centre as explained here:

Then if he want to treat himself he needs to overcome the biochemical underpinnings that caused him to become an addict in the first place. Dug treatment is more that just abstaining from drugs. Most drug addicts are hypoglycemic, a pre-existing condition that needs to be treated. Drug addiction is not a matter or a "weak will", but it is due to a underlying physiological disorder that may have existed prior to him using drug as self-medication.
