Answer
Hi Mick,

You seem really motivated to stop using drugs, and I commend you on your willingness to achieve abstinence and recovery after struggling with the problem for so long.  For many individuals with drug problems, denial and resistance can get in the way of change. In that sense you are right: you can't get someone to quit using substances unless they find a benefit in doing so.

First, I suggest you get a substance abuse evaluation, and follow the recommendations that your counselor will offer.  Second, I would urge you to examine your social environment, and see how much that creates temptation to use.  Do you routinely associate with people who are using?  That can be a deal-breaker for recovery.  There's too much temptation and opportunity in those social encounters.

Have you attended any self-help meetings?  Alcoholics Anonymous/Narcotics Anonymous or Smart Recovery meetings may be found in your area.  You can find them on the internet for your location.

Fortunately, marijuana has little physical dependence, so you will not need medical detox.  It also is a drug that many people use who feel it has no downside; in your case, you can see it is not problem-free.  Marijuana, in fact, creates many difficulties for a lot of individuals, and it's an illusion that it is safe.  If you do an internet search on harmfulness stemming from marijuana use, you'll find a lot of the research underscoring this.

I appreciate the opportunity to answer your question and hope you will find this helpful.

Best,
Peter
