Addiction to Drugs/Recovering crack addict and sex

Question
My boyfriend is a recovering crack addict. How does it affect their sex lives? He thinks it is ok to have sex once every 2-3 weeks. Does it lessen their desire or ability? When he does have sex, he seems to get it over with as quickly as possible so I won't ask again. He seems satisfied, but I'm not sure. Is this normal for an ex-user or is it something else. He is 48 y.o.

Answer
HI Nicki,

If he is no longer using and it has been a while, I don't imagine it would have a huge impact.  People have different ideas about sex, some people think multiple times in a day is usual, some people think once a year is okay, and most people are somewhere in between.  Contrary to popular culture, some men are just not that sexual.

I would suggest that you speak to him about this.  Try to present it in a very supportive way, as people can get very defensive about sex.  Ask him if there is anything that is bothering him.  Personally, I wouldn't bring up the crack use as this adds another level to it, and if it is relevant he can raise it with you.

Take care and whatever you do, do it safely,
