Addiction to Drugs - The Effects of Tobacco Use

Expert: Crystal - 3/28/2009

Question
Dear Crystal,
I am 14 years old and need some help with a project that I am working on called The Effects of Tobacco and I was hoping that you could help me out. Now I am aware that tobacco use over a extended period of time can result in cancer but, does smoking have any immediate effect on a persons body the first time they try tobacco? Thank you for your help and time in advance.

Answer
Mary,

Entering any type of substance into the system that is made to alter who we are in any way has effects from the first time, it depends on whether or not you continue to use as to whether the effects become permanent or not. It all depends on the individual as well and well their immune system works, but look at the society today, children smoke even when they don't because they live in a homes where their parents expose them to it and it can lead to long term damage in a child who doesn't even physically put a cigarette to their own lips? What do you think about that?
