Question
My son is 24 and constantly drinking to excess with xanax abuse mixed in. After he was arrested for violating his DWI probation. Upon release I allowed him to move home on the condition that he stay sober and save money to get back on his own. He has taken advantage of my love and kindness. After several drunken and drugged up incidents along with the lies and no sense of direction, even after we have talked to him at length about his problems, he comes home messed up. I can tell he is on xanax when he opens the door. My wife and I must ask him to leave. I feel we should give him 30 days to find somewhere to live, but he needs help right also. I want to send him on his way knowing we love him and a place to go to get the help he needs. Of course he has no insurance. Doing the right thing feels wrong, but I know it's the right thing for us as we will no longer watch him destroy himself. His bio mother is in a rehab right now and  has been in and out for years. Long story, short question. What is the best and most direct approach to get him help and get him out at the same time.

Answer
Hi David,

Your son's addiction to alcohol or other drugs is beyond the control of your son or you. It is a serious physiological illness, that needs to be treated from a nutritional/medical point of view. The fact that his biological mother is also an addict may indicate that we are dealing with a genetic illness as well. Nevertheless they all can be treated with the co-operation and willingness of your son. You need to understand the underlying biochemistry of drug addiction by reading the following articles:
