Question
This is a difficult time for my wife and I. We took him in after he lost his job and separated and divorced his second wife. Prior to this he was sober for 3 years.   He has been on this path before, drinking and doing the drugs.  Worst is his being in denial about it. We told to CA meetings and he said he didn't need them anymore.

He has now been arrested for drug possession and demands to be bailed out.  We have decided not bail him out and let him  hopefully get help some help via the court system. He has been bailed out in the past but this time no more. I'm having some reservations about it so to cut to the chase, is this the right thing to do?

Answer
Hi Ralph,

I believe you have taken the right steps not to bail him out, as a drug addict in denial has to experience a crisis, before he is ready to admit he has an addiction problem. The trouble is that accepting one's addiction does not necessarily lead to a cure, because I believe most rehabilitation programs tend to ignore the underlying biochemical disorder that is responsible for a person to become addicted. Most addict are found to be hypoglycemic and this needs to be treated BEFORE considering any other "psychological" issues. Please read:

Drug Addiction is a Nutritional Disorder at:
http://www.hypoglycemia.asn.au/articles/drug_addictions_nutritional_disorder.htm...
and discuss this with a Nutritional Doctor, Clinical Nutritionist or a Nutritional Psychologist, if self-help therapy fails.

Nutritional therapy should be accompanied with a self-help psychotherapy course as at:

Summary of Self-help Pyschotherapy at:
http://www.hypoglycemia.asn.au/articles/self-help_personal_growth.html#PSYCHOTHE...

in its entirety from beginning to end. It includes a program showing you how to overcome a negative self-image, and assertiveness training program, communication course and values clarification course. Most people can learn these skills by reading these articles over and over again. This program is also available in my book "Getting off the Hook" which is freely available on the internet at Google Book Search.
