QUESTION: My brother is 52 years old,he lives with my mom because his wife kicked him out due to his alchol binges,he takes handfuls of xanax and strong pain meds. My mom is 73 years old and she is deathly afraid of him!!! We have called the police numerous times and they do nothing because he lives at her address. He has been to several re-habs and as soon as he gets out the first place he goes is to the store to buy booze, then he proceeds to visit his family Dr. to get more prescriptions. I am going out of my mind,my mom calls me crying day in and day out..I feel so sorry for her but what can I do,she went to the police station yesterday to file for a 7 day eviction to get him out,and I no for a fact he isn't going to leave,so the police will be called and they will do what they have to do! I DON'T feel sorry for him at all he has had plenty of chances to get help, with the family behind him all the way,but this has gone on for too long!!!! My mom just wants to have peace and quiet. She has to take her purse to bed with her so he doesn't steel any money from her also she recently bought a strong box to put her meds. in it...I could go on and on with this, but whats the point....IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE WHO HEAR'S ME????? ANSWER: Dear cynthia,

This must be an awful situation for your mother. It is obvious to me that he has never been treated for his alcoholism. It is a treatable disease, but its scientific treatment is not very well known among rehabilitation centres. If he commits an offence because of his alcoholism there may be a chance to treat him under the supervision of  Probation and Parole officer.  The psychonutritional approach to the treatment of drug addiction is covered in my book "Getting off the Hook" which is freely available on the internet. It is also explained at our web site by reading the following articles:

Why Alcoholics Drink? at
http://www.hypoglycemia.asn.au/articles/WAD.html

Alcoholism (Addiction) is a Treatable Disease at:
http://curezone.com/upload/PDF/Articles/jurplesman/alcoholism_treatable.pdf

Drug Addiction is a Nutritional Disorder at:
http://www.hypoglycemia.asn.au/articles/drug_addictions_nutritional_disorder.htm

The first step in treatment is going on a hypoglycemic diet. If problems persist, it is best to consult a Nutritional Doctor, Clinical Nutritionist or a Nutritional Psychologist.

An alcoholic has to be motivated to do something about his addiction. But often lack of motivation is due to the fact that proper psychonutritional treatment is not available, and hence many attempts at treatments fail. But if your brother is a reader, he should be able to help himself by reading my book on the internet and the articles at our web site.

Once he is in treatment he also should study:

Summary of Self-help Pyschotherapy at:
http://www.hypoglycemia.asn.au/articles/self-help_personal_growth.html#PSYCHOTHE

in its entirety from beginning to end. It includes a program showing you how to overcome a negative self-image, and assertiveness training program, communication course and values clarification course. Most people can learn these skills by reading these articles over and over again. This program is also available in my book "Getting off the Hook" which is freely available on the internet at Google Book Search.

It is best to fond a Nutritional Doctor, Clinical Nutritionist or a Nutritional Psychologist to help him out with the nutrition part.

Answer
I can understand your frustration. I am not set up to get people into a rehabilitation centres. I can only help addicts who are ready to undergo self-help therapy, which requires them to read educational articles, when they are ready and motivated.

I think you would be better off, asking your mother's doctor to get your brother scheduled for the sake of your mother's health.

Please talk to your mother's doctor.
