Addiction to Drugs/Snorting Pain Pills

Question
QUESTION: I would like to know specifically what happens to the inside of you nose after snorting pills for a long period of time.  And if there are any site that contain only the answer to this particular question. Thank you

ANSWER: Hi Brandon,

Most of what we know about the harmfulness of snorting has been gained from observations of what happens with intranasal cocaine abuse.

The tissues of the nasal cavities are very delicate, and eventually begin to deteriorate due to the repeated irritation of the drugs.  It is possible eventually to develop a perforation, in other words, a hole right through the cartilage that makes up much of the nose.  The blood supply gets affected and causes the death of a portion of the septal cartilege.  This is pretty serious business and I can't say just how much this is reversible.

If that's you, I urge you to stop!  I don't know of any particular web sites that describe this harmfulness, but would say a general search should bring some information.  No question, though: The more you do it, the sooner you will develop complications.

QUESTION: Thank you Peter that was actually helpful.  I just wanted to know if there is anything over the counter that I could take, (in my nose) for the pain that is there after not having anything for a day or two.  It hurts so bad that it hurts my teeth to were it will wake me up if I am asleep, I believe I have done irreversible damage what is your opinion.  thank you again.

Answer
It's hard to say, Brandon.  I would see a doctor immediately.  Medical stuff is not my area of expertise.

I'm afraid I don't know of anything over the counter you could take for this. But this injury could become infected if you don't get it treated.

There are a few web sites that offer answers regarding physical health problems.  Maybe you could check one of them out.  But again, seeing a doctor is your best bet.

Best wishes,
Peter
