Addiction to Drugs/Ativan

Question
Hello,
I have been taking 4mg/day Ativan for a few years now. It is the only medication that staves off my anxiety disorder. I have recently moved to Florida from North Carolina. I understand that is is very hard to get prescriptions for controlled substances in Florida. I was wondering, since you are a doctor, what the best way would be to approach a physician/psychiatrist on this subject. I can obtain my medical records from my old doctor in NC and am certain he would speak to any physician if need be. It is my understanding that this medication is not one that is easily stopped so I am quite frightened at this point that I will run out and face severe withdrawal. I am not an addict, I have taken the same amount for years and would be willing to cut back the dosage, though due to my recent separation from my husband I really do not want to stop completely right now. Thank you for any advice you can give me.

Answer
Hi Susan,

Sorry for my late reply; I've had some catching up to do.  Yes, it is difficult to get prescriptions for benzodiazepine and opioid medications, due to their tendency to be abused.

Let me say also, that I'm not a doctor, so have no physician's perspective on this problem.  What I can tell you is that there are enormous difference in how physicians prescribe these and other drugs.  Some will ask you if you have a substance abuse problem, and go from there.  Others will not.  Some will prescribe without questions, some will be very scrutinizing.  I think if you are honest and emphasize 1) that you want the lowest dose possible for it to be effective,  and 2) you are seeking alternatives to benzos for anxiety relief, you have your best chances. One alternative is counseling.

In addition, you may want to look into holistic methods for anxiety reduction.  They're inherently safer, healthier, and you never have to worry about dependence.  Do a search on Google and you'll find many sites about this, or books are available on the subject.

Regards,
Peter
