Addiction to Drugs/Safely detoxing
Expert: Peter L. - 3/9/2011
QuestionHi my name is Sandra I recently found out I was pregnant with child #2, less then one week ago. I have been addicted to percocet and have been taking them daily for a long time ( not really sure how long) If I try to stop taking them I go into withdrawal, the whole shebang with the sweats, cramps, irritability. I on a daily basis take between 30 and 90 mgs. What I was wondering is, because I buy and take them illegally, how I could safely detox. I do not want my baby to be born addicted to these evil pills. But I also don't want my child to be taken away, if I ask my Dr. to help. I believe that because it's early in my pregnancy the baby should not yet be dependent on them. But I've also read that the violent nature of detox may cause me to miscarry. Any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
AnswerHi Sandra,
I am currently working with a pregnant client, and we have her on Subutex. Please google that word and learn about this medication.
Opioid replacement therapies, of which Subutex is one, can often be used during pregnancy. Suboxone, closely related to Subutex, is not what is most recommended for pregnant women addicted to opioids.
Now, about your fears about asking your doctor: I recommend you contact a Suboxone provider in your area. Check out this link:

Tell him or her about your pregnancy. You might also seek out a substance abuse program in your area. They will work with you and not compromise your confidentiality. They will be of help to you, not attempt to turn you in to anyone. And as you may know, violating your confidentiality is illegal. Most substance abuse programs today are geared to deal with opioid addiction, and have physicians who are well versed in proper medical applications of medications to assist in this treatment.
You should have medical attention through this process, and not attempt a detox on your own.
The important thing is that you get help soon and reduce the possibility of harm to your baby.
Any other questions, please feel free to ask.
