Addiction to Drugs/relapse
Expert: Jurriaan Plesman, Nutritional Psychotherapist - 5/31/2011
QuestionI just picked up my 9 month chip from a local support group. After this occasion I was placed in a hospital, for a routine surgery on my naval. The doctor asked me if I new about pain medication, but I played stupid and told him no. which was a lie because I have been highly addicted to these medications for the last 10 years before i entered into a recovery program. After my surgery I had a script of Perkocets, 5/325 generic OXYCODONE. I convinced myself that I would take them only for my stomach pain and not to treat my emotional pain, which I did in the past.
I told my sponsor what was going on with my perscription and of course he questioned my motives for using this medicine.I went to defense mode, and my pride took over while all ready under the influence of the drug. I immediately went into justifying my use of the narcotic, which was justifiable, but my mental abstinence of decent judgment had all ready taken place. I lost control by thinking I had control.
I took the medicine as prescribed for the first three days, but after that I was taking them when ever I felt like, and I justified it by not taking more than the prescribed amount of pills at any one given time. Now I sit here feeling as though all my time in recovery amounts for nothing. I'm trying to justify that it isn't any of my sponsors business what I do which I know is mental masturbation. I'm not using any drugs anymore because they are gone now, but given the chance to get more I cant honestly say what I would do. I thought I had hit my rock bottom time and time again ,but this shows me that maybe a rock bottom wont be enough for me, maybe death is the only way I'll stop using. Thats another topic though. Maybe. What I want to know is should I tell my sponsor what happened? What about my friends in recovery? Any other advice you may have pertaining to my situation.
AnswerHi Shawn,
If you feel you have an addiction problem it is simply because you have an underlying biochemical abnormality that causes you to be addicted. Most addicted people are hypoglycemic and so the first step in going on a hypoglycemic diet. Please read my book on the internet, or read articles at our web site. Please read:
Drug Addiction is a Nutritional Disorder at:
http://www.hypoglycemia.asn.au/articles/drug_addictions_nutritional_disorder.htm...
and discuss this with a Nutritional Doctor, Clinical Nutritionist or a Nutritional Psychotherapist, if self-help therapy fails. The first step in treatment is going on a hypoglycemic diet (look up at our web site).
For more information use our "Search our Web Site" or the INDEX and look for articles containing topics entered in search engine.
You can tell you sponsor anything you like, but you have to understand that it is biological disorder and not a "psychological" disorder. He is not going to help you unless he treats the biological disorder.
