Question
My husband is 71 and not in particularly good health. He had been taking codeine phosphate 30mg x 6 daily for several years for nasty arthritis; he can't take NSAID's. he tried stopping the codeine but got awful diarrhoea. Could you suggest a reduction programme for him please?

Answer
Hi Mary,
Codeine is a substance that has habit forming qualities. Anyone who uses a medication like this long term will suffer from withdrawal type symptoms. Diarrhea is a common side effect after long term use of codeine. You are right that a weaning program with be the safest for your husband to reduce any withdrawal symptoms. As an addiction specialist, I certainly understand your concerns, but it would not be appropriate for me to give you medical advice.
It would be best for you to contact his physician to make sure that the reduction is handled as safely for his health and comfort as possible.
I hope this information is helpful to you,
Sherrie
