Addiction to Drugs/Heroin addiction

Question
Hello, my name is Laurie. Recently I found out my 25 yr old son has been addicted to heroin and prescription pills.  He was on methadone to help keep him off the heroin, but suddenly his entire world fell apart.  I cannot tell you how much I love him, there are not words for that.  Please help us.  He's been caught stealing from us including pawning wedding rings, etc. He was living with a friend but the friend went to jail and he is now homeless. I believe he stays with someone he's recently met only because he has nowhere else to stay. His stepfather will not let him come here and I can't tell you the pain that brings me.  He calls it "tough love" but I honestly think my son will be hurt/dead anyday due to being so alone and living a life severely contrary to the person he is/was.  How can I help him when he doesn't have a place to stay. He says he can't work because he's homeless, he's too sick since he doesn't eat right, his natural father is diabetic and we believe he is too, or perhaps he is hypoglycemic. How does he get life together without some sort of help.  He has no job, no home, no money, & no car.  Especially he doesn't want to be around family because of his shame, he feels he will never be seen as anything than a drug addcit. I cannot convince him differetly.  Not only is he killing himself, he's killing us too, his brother, sister and mom. We love him unconditionally, we need him back in order to survive as a family. Please help us..God bless and please pray for him.

Answer
Dear Laurie,

I fully understand what a difficult situation you are in.

You are so right that your son may be hypoglycemic, which means that he has a faulty biochemistry and cannot produce the feel-good neurotransmitters to make him feel happy and content when he normally should.

He needs to go on a hypoglycemic diet, if he want to stay away from drugs.

But first he needs to be detoxified, and it is best that he goes to a proper detoxification centre.
