Addiction to Drugs - Percocet addiction and pain

Expert: Mary - 10/5/2007

Question
My Mom took percocet for 10 months for symptoms of osteo hairline fractures. The more pills she took the more pain she reported.... Can the addiction intensify in her own mind the pain she was feeling - she ended up in detox at age 72

Answer
DEAR HANNAH
YES HER PERCEPTION OF THE PAIN CAN INCREASE AS AN UNCONSCIOUS DESIRE TO TAKE MORE AND MORE IMPORTANTLY THE BODY'S PAIN RECEPTORS BUILD UP A  PHYSICAL TOLERANCE AND SHE WOULD NEED MORE TO ACHIEVE THE DESIRED EFFECT.
HOPE SHE IS DOING WELL DETOX IS ONLY THE BEGINNING .SHE NEEDS TO GO TO NA MEETINGS AND AFTERCARE
