Subject: tramadol

Question
I have been on tramadol for a year now for chronic back pain. When I do not take my morning dose, my body gets so weak and I feel really heavy. Is this addiction?
Also, are there long term effects with this drug? I mean can it harm any organs after taking if for a long period?
Thank you
Tiffany

Answer
Tiffany,
What are describing is a withdrawal symptom. Tramadol is a (Narcotic Like) medication used for chronic pain and has a time release. You should never stop taking this without contacting your doctor first. medications like these take time to come off of and yes you can have withdrawal symptoms as severe as alcoholics and you should be extra careful if you have a history of alcoholism or drug addiction or a history of seizures.
When you take any medication for a period of time your body builds up a tolerance as well as some dependence. It is important that you understand that this does NOT make you an addict, you are under the care of a doctor and you are following doctors orders and recommendations. There is HUGE difference.
The only thing I know about Tramadol is that it is important not to consume any alcohol or drugs while on this med. I have not heard of it causing damage to the body organs but I have read that it is important not to mix any other substances with it.
I hope this helps.
