Question
QUESTION: Hi,

I am scanning newspaper articles and making pdf files out of them. Also, within each pdf file I have put attachments to other newspaper articles. The problem is when I tried to send the whole adobe document through email at work it doesnt send because it is too big. Then, when I try to com-press the files into jpeg the attachments wont work. I need to be able to freely send the documents through email. The problem is, when I started attaching documents within pdf the size of the file gets bigger and bigger. Then when i try to compress it...i lose the attachment!

Thanks for your help!

ANSWER: Hi Caroline,

Could you tell me which version of Acrobat Pro you are using?
The solution to this is basically the same no matter what the version, however, the commands are in different places depending on the version you are using.

Try choosing "Reduce File Size" that will reduce the size considerably of your pdf without converting it to a jpeg.

Another way would be to optimize the pdf. This will also reduce the size a bit but gives you more options to include links and change the compression settings and it also keeps the file as a pdf.

QUESTION: I am using version 5.0

Answer
Reduce File Size should be under the File Menu or the Document Menu. It could also be under Advanced. Its difficult to remember as version 5 was so long ago.

You could also try to use the PDF Optimizer. Under Advanced, you have the ability to change the downsample resolution which will create a smaller size file and keep the attachments.

Are the files you are attaching also pdf files? If yes, try inserting them into the actual document instead of attaching them. This will also make a smaller file size.

Let me know how this works out for you.

Thanks,
