Adobe Acrobat - PDF Forms - Date/Time Field

Expert: Ken Black - 10/29/2009

Question
QUESTION: Trying to set up a Date/Time Field to be automatically calculated when the user opens the form. No data appears in the Preview page, the saved document or when the form is printed?

ANSWER: Hi Karen,

What version of Acrobat are you using? Is this form created in Acrobat or LiveCycle?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Using Acrobat Professional 8.0 and creating the form in LiveCycle. Original document is an excel file, converted to PDF. Does it make a difference if the original doc. is a blank/new page or a scanned document?

Answer
Hi Karen,

It should not make any difference what the original doc is. The form field and assigned values are created by LiveCycle.

While my experience with LiveCycle is limited, I can offer a few suggestions.

After you add the field for your date and time, you can change the object properties under the Field, Value, and Binding tabs of the Object palette.

For this to work your field needs to have a locale specified, in this case you want the Viewer's System Locale to be used.

In the Object palette, click on the Field tab; next, choose Viewer's System Locale from the Locale list.

In the Value tab, under Type, choose Calculated - Read Only; choose the Runtime Property - Current Date/Time, under Calculation Script.

Last, but not least, make sure the Presence, under the Field tab is set to Visible. This allows viewing and printing of the object and should be set by default but is a good place to check for error.

Thanks,

Ken Black
