About Justin VanAlstyne Expertise I have a full working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat 5.0 - 7.01. I have experience in creating interactive PDFs, embedding multimedia, web-based forms, creating presentations using PDF, advanced prepress preparation, PDF web optimization, color management, and using PDF as a soft-proofing tool. I do not have a lot of experience using Acrobat`s advanced Javascripting features, though a lot of custom functionality can be built into a PDF this way.

Question Sorry, but it is not a drop-down menu. -David-------------------------

Question -
I have the full Acrobat 5 program - i.e., I am able to create PDF documents, not merely read them. When I go to Document Security, it just gives the various settings, none are editable. The menu bar is gray, except for the help menu. I'm still miffed - everyone (online) is telling me I can change the settings but I don't see it. Still miffed. -David-------------------------

Thanks, Justin. But I double checked my PDFs and there is no way to change the settings. On my Mac I went to File, Document Secirity, and it brings up a fixed window listing the security settings. There is nothing available on the top of the screen anywhere to make changes for printing or non-printing. I am miffed. ?

Hello-
I am using Adobe Acrobat 5 to create PDFs on my Mac. These will be viewable on my website. How do I set them to be
non-printable? Thank you.
Answer -
David-
Very simply. Open up the PDF, go to the File menu to "Document Propeties" (Command - D), and then go the the Security section. There you will be able to set a password to lock the document, and set the print and editing options for the PDF. You have to set a password to enable these settings. None of them are permanent. After locking down the PDF, you can always come back to this screen, enter the password, and turn off all the security at any time down the road.

Under the Acrobat 'File' menu, there should be a menu item named 'Document Properties'. Once in that menu, go the to the "Security" list item on the left. Then you want to change "Security Method:" to 'Password Security', which prompts you to enter your desired password, and then lets you change the security settings for that document.
You must have the full version of Acrobat to do this. You can not edit these options with the free Acrobat Reader program.
Hope this helps,

If you go to Document Properties> Security, you will initially see just a non-editable list of the current settings. At the top of that box, there is a dropdown menu labelled "Security Method", it should initially say "No Security". If it does, change it to "Password Security" which will bring up a box asking you to input a password, and then will allow you to change the document security settings.
Once you are done editing your security settings, the main Security box will now show the allowed/not allowed settings in a non-editable list.

I'm sorry that you are having such problems. It is partially my fault because I haven't worked in Acrobat 5 in almost 2 years, so I've forgotten basically how things are set up. I did some research and came across this helpful tutorial for securing documents in Acrobat 5:
