About Justin VanAlstyne
Expertise
I have a full working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat 5.0 - 7.01. I have experience in creating interactive PDFs, embedding multimedia, web-based forms, creating presentations using PDF, advanced prepress preparation, PDF web optimization, color management, and using PDF as a soft-proofing tool. I do not have a lot of experience using Acrobat`s advanced Javascripting features, though a lot of custom functionality can be built into a PDF this way.

Subject: Excel to PDF Creates 3 files! WHY?

Question
Hi Justin thanks for the quick response. I haven't actually called tech support yet. I figured I should see if anyone out there could help me first before I call support. I didn't know this was a actually a complex problem, I thought maybe a bunch of other people were having the same issue. Anyway, just wanna ask in your professional opinion, do you think this is an Microsoft or Adobe problem?

Question -
Hi there. I have an Excel spreadsheet with 8 worksheet tabs at the bottom. When I try to print all the worksheets using Acrobat PDFWriter, I get 3 seperate PDF files! The 1st PDF contains the 1st worksheet, the 2nd PDF contains the 2nd to the 7th worksheet, and the 3rd PDF contains the 8th worksheet. Why is it giving me 3 PDF files? I only want 1 PDF file. Is it a setting in Excel that I need to change?

I have created a visual animation of what's happening. You can view it at http://www.djmarxus.com/exceltopdf.html If possible, please view the animation, as it shows exactly what is going on. I need this problem solved. I can't end up with 3 PDF files, I only need 1.

I will give you a perfect rating and my most extreme thanks if you can answer this for me. Thank you so much.

Thanks again for your help,
Mark

Sorry Mark, I really can't replace Adobe Tech Support for problems like this. Have you tried contacting Adobe or MS about what's happening? I am an expert in Acrobat, but I just can't troubleshoot complex problems like this. This could be a bug in the PDFWrite printer driver, a problem with Excel, or just a freak Windows bug. I suppose there could be a rational reason for it, but there isn't anything that I can think.

Good luck,

Answer
Mark-

I don't think the problem itself is complex, but I think the solution or explanation for it may be complex.

If I put money on it, I'd have to say it's an Excel quirk. From my experience working with the Adobe print driver, it prints only exactly what you give it. Although I have completely stopped using the Adobe print driver in Mac OS X because it is just awful to use. Perhaps Excel is physically sending the driver 3 different print jobs from the same document, which when you print normally, you'd never see or notice, but when going to PDF it creates 3 PDFs. Try printing your same workbook to a real printer, and see if Excel creates 3 different print jobs while it's printing.
If it just creates one, then perhaps it is a problem with the Adobe driver.

Have you checked to make sure there aren't any program updates for your version of Office and Acrobat?
