About Justin VanAlstyne
Expertise
I have a full working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat 5.0 - 7.01. I have experience in creating interactive PDFs, embedding multimedia, web-based forms, creating presentations using PDF, advanced prepress preparation, PDF web optimization, color management, and using PDF as a soft-proofing tool. I do not have a lot of experience using Acrobat`s advanced Javascripting features, though a lot of custom functionality can be built into a PDF this way.

Question
Justin,

I have a friend who has Word files and needs them as PDF files.  In order to do that, he's printing the Word files and scanning them in with a scanner into Acrobat Writer.  I told him there is certainly a better way...

What is the best and cheapest (free?) way to convert .doc files -> .pdf files in the following two scenarios:
  - with MS Word and Acrobat *Writer*
and
  - with MS Word but without Acrobat *Writer*
?

Thanks so much!
Eliezer

Answer
Eliezer-

I thought I answered this question already, but it's still here. I probably forgot to go through the 'preview' and then the 'send' screens.

Anyway, depending upon what version of Acrobat you have, it should have installed a macro button in your MS Office applications that allows you to do one-click PDF creation.

The way most people create PDFs is by using the "AdobePDF" print driver that also installs with Acrobat (full version, not the free  Reader). Using this, you can select it as the printer from almost any application to create PDFs.

If you are using OS X 10.3.x (Panther), you can create basic PDFs for free by going to the Print dialog in your application, and either clicking the "Save as PDF" button, or by doing a print preview, and then save the preview as a PDF.

If you are running Windows, or an older version of Mac OS, head over to www.planetpdf.com and browse their large directory of PDF tools. I'm sure you will be able to find a suitable PDF creation tool as shareware.
