Carol --
Thanks so much for the info on 'page numbers' mystery in Acrobat 5. I thought I was doing something wrong over and over again! And the 'Help" manual was no help! Yep, I had to number pages in my source docs - and then edit using 'text touch-up' to change positions in the pdf. Best solution was to move on to Acrobat 6 in which Adobe finally included a REAL 'header/footer' capability.
Thanks again.

Actually you can use the text tool in Adobe Acrobat to change the numbers on the actual pages. Click on the "T" select Touch up and select your page number. Then change to the page number to your desired number. This was posted back in 2003 but came across this question when looking for my own answer.

You can add page numbers in Adobe Acrobat Standard in PDF form.
Go to Documents
Select "Add Headers and Footers"
Select "Insert" under Insert Page Numbers and adjust where you'd like them to appear on your document.
Hit OK.
