Question I have been fighting FrameMaker 7.2 over their treatment of sorting, and sorting tables.
a) FrameMaker's sort is assuming the values are numeric unless there's a non-numeric character in the string (and characters like "- + E . ," are considered numeric. I have to manually append an underscore (and color it white so its invisible) to each term to ensure its nonnumeric to get it to sort properly. Is there a way to tell FrameMaker to sort them as alphanumeric strings?
b) When I sort a table, I lose any cross-reference tags made to those entries.
Does FrameMaker 8 resolve these?
Answer I have the same problem with Framemaker.
I do not know of any solution to this problem, other than what you are doing. You might trying one of the following:
If you have a long list of items,
or you import a list into Frame and then put it into a Table and sort it, then try the following:
First take your information and import it into Word, and try letting Word sort it to see if you get the results you want, or try importing the file into EXCEL and sort it using Excel.
When you export out of WORD be sure you do as save as rtf - then it will import into Frame.
When you export out of Excel - do a save as .txt, which is a tabbed delimited file.

About your cross-references: Since there are many ways to do a cross-reference: I cannot give you a specific answer, other than:
Make sure your cross-reference markers are not deleted and do a cross-reference update after the sort.

I cannot answer any questions about Frame 8 as I am only working with Frame 7.1
