Subject: FM7-gaps in imported text

Question
QUESTION: Hi Wayne:
I'm working with Windows FM7, converting Word documents. The documents
were originally on a Mac in Word X. I transferred them to the PC, saved them
as Word '97, then saved a text version and imported the text into a FM
document. Certain places have huge gaps of 1/3-1/2 page where the text
just goes to the next page. Selecting the Keep With Next Pgf or Previous Pgf
doesn't help. It's like there's a line break somewhere to be deleted, or
somehow I have to correct the flow. Can you help?

Thanks

ANSWER: A Couple of things to check:
One of the below should solve your problem for text flow.

1. Make sure you don't have extra "hard" line returns. When using Word, some people would just hit the "enter" key repeatedly to "force" text to the next page instead of inserting a "page break." To check this go to the Menu Bar - Select VIEW - TEXT SYMBOLS, if you see lots of extra "paragraph marks" with no text - just delete them.

2. With you cursor in Frame main text area do a "SELECT ALL" (Ctrl and A Key). Go to the MENU Bar - Select FORMAT - PARAGRAPHS - DESIGNER. Select the Pagination TAB.
Just below the "Start" Text is a Selection Box - Make sure "Anywhere" is displayed. Make sure both "Next Pgf" and "Previous Pgf" boxes are unchecked, then click the "Apply" button.

If you are still having problems send me an email with one of your files attached and I will take a look at it.
Be sure you put Framemaker in the subject area.

QUESTION: Hi Wayne:

Thanks for the answer. It's been a little while since I've worked in FM.

The solution that worked was to change the pagination for each format by
selecting "Next Pgf" and "Previous Pgf" and setting the Widows and Orphans
value to a high number (found this tip on another site). So now it flows... but
this solution seems clunky, like Word, as now I have to go in and manually set
breaks. Any thoughts?

Answer
I never use "Next Pgf" or "Previous Pgf".
I select the "line" that I want to have start at the "TOP of PAGE" and then use the pagination feature to set that line to "Start at Top of Page."
You can always just hit the "Enter" key the required number of times to force the text to start on the "next page."
Another way of doing this is create a variation of your paragraph styles: For Example: If you have a style named: "Subject 1" then create a style named: "Subject 1 TOP" for Top of page, then apply it as required, (you might need a couple more new styles). Then you can just import  the styles from Document 1 into Document 2.

or

If it doesn't really matter to you just let your "Text Flow" however.

or

What I have done is "re-mapped" some of my "F" keys:
The F1 and F6 save me a lot of time:
F1 - Adds or removes the Change Bar
F2 - Cut Text
F3 - Copy Text
F4 - Paste Text
F6 - Start at Top of Page
F11 - Go to Master Page
F12 - Go to Body Page

If you are using Frame 7, I can send you the files and instructions on how to install these. They are 2 small frame files. You just rename your current ones as old and install the other 2 in the same folder.
