Subject: "See Also" Macro in FrameMaker
Question Hi Wayne,
I'm using FrameMaker 8.0 with a FM 7.0 User Guide. The User Guide on Chapter 20 discusses "Mappings for cross-reference formats" --in particular, it discusses how cross-references such as "See "Section Blah" on page 66 for more information" can be mapped by default to a pre-defined cross-reference conversion macro called See Also.
Can this macro be used when we take our FM docs, save them as .MIFs, and then import them into Robohelp HTML? I haven't had success with this yet.
Under what conditions does this "See Also" macro work? Is there another conversion macro I could create and include somewhere to convert our standard print cross-references to hyperlinks-sans-page-numbers in HTML?
Thanks!
Virginia
Answer Virgina - I have not had any experience with Frame 8, however if you are using the Frame 7 Manual - go to Chapter 19 approximately page 454 and there is a table which tells how various hypertext commands will work when you convert the document to HTML or pdf.
Also there is a lot of information contained in the online help manual.
Just go HELP on the Menu Bar and then using the "Search" function enter "cross-reference" and there is a lot of entries you can review.
I was only able to get the following to happen when I had a cross-reference that went to a different file that was NOT in the same book; when I created the pdf - the cross-reference will only open the document at the first page and not go the actual location of the cross-referenced item.
You can open the mif file in word and possible find what you want with it. This is too much to explain in this forum. If you send me one of your files, I can illustrate how it works with pdf and/or html.
You can do a lot of "find and replace" using Word or Notepad - you just have to make sure you save the document correctly.
If you save as mif file - then when you are ready to open it - right click and select "Open With" - DO NOT open a empty Word document and then import it as Word will convert it to a Word Document.
If you want send me one of your documents and I can illustrate what to look for, or send me your email address and I will send you and example.
Be sure to put Framemaker in the subject line.
Make sure you send me the mif file or do a "save as Frame 7"
as that is the only version I have.
