Adobe Framemaker/splitting a book chapter

Question
I have formatted a book in Framemaker and created cross references throughout as well as index markers. One of the files is very long and I would like to divide it into chapters. Is there a way to do this without losing all of the cross references? In other words, I want to make ten files out of one file that is already linked to the contents, index, and in other ways.

As soon as you give the file a new name, i.e Chpt 1, Chpt 2, Chpt 3, etc., the Frame generated files will not be able to find the "new" file names.
Try the following:
Work with a copy of your files.
Split your large file into the various chapters and add those to the Book and setup your numbering.
You will need to accomplish a "manual" update of the cross-references, etc.
The Frame help file has some good information on this. The information below is taken from the help file.

To resolve a cross-reference when a marker has been moved to another file or the file has been renamed:

•Choose Edit > Update References.
•Choose Update Unresolved Cross-References from the Commands pop-up menu.
•In the Total of Unresolved Cross-References scroll list, select the file that used to contain the source of the unresolved cross-reference. The text below the scroll list indicates how many cross-references to the selected file are unresolved.
•Do one of the following:
•(Windows and UNIX) In the Look In scroll list, select the file that contains the source, and click Open.
•(Mac OS) Click Change to File, select the file in the scroll list, and click Select.
If FrameMaker can't perform the update, select a different file in the Look In scroll list, and then try again.

•To resolve cross-references to any other file listed in the Total of Unresolved Cross-References scroll list, repeat steps 3 and 4. Then click Done.
