Question
I inherited a FM 7.2 file whose Header1 numbering begins at 3, but I want it to begin at 5.  How do I change the numbering?

Answer
Carmelle
One of 2 things can be causing the paragraph to start numbering at 3.
Make a copy of your document prior to accomplish the following:
1. Open your document and select the paragraph you want to change.
2. Go to the menu bar and select FORMAT - DOCUMENT NUMBERING - then select the
Paragraph Tag in the pop-up window. If the "Continue Numbering from Previous Paragraph
in Book" is checked you will need to uncheck it. This may cause all of your paragraphs with
the HEADING1 style applied to change.
3. Now you need to close that window and with your document open and your paragraph selected,
go to the menu bar and select FORMAT - PARAGRAPH - DESIGNER, then Select the Numbering Tab.
4. Look at the "Paragraph Tag" space = it should say "Heading1:
5. Now look at the space below the "Autonumber Format" - it might look something like the
following: <n=3>\t
If it does - the just change the 3 to a 5. So now it should look something like <n=5>\t
Read the code as follows: n is for number, \t is for a tab.
Now you will need to go back to the paragraph tag are and change the Paragraph tag to something
like "Heading1=5" (you don't need to use the quotes.
6. Now select the "Apply" button and the numbering should change to a 5.
7. If you need to revise your other paragraphs do the following:
  A. Now go back to your document and select the next heading below the number 5 heading.
  B. Look in the Paragraph Tag space and change it to something like Heading1-AutoNumber
  C. Go to the Autonumber Format Space and enter something like the following: <n+> this will
increase the Heading1 style by 1 each time it is applied.
  D. Now select the "Update All" button and all paragraphs tagged Heading1 will be changed
     to Heading1-Autonumber.
You should be able to open the HELP file and select autonumbering and there should be some pretty good information there.

If this doesn't solve your problem - send me a copy of your file and I will take a look at it.
My email is waynejohnson2@comcast.net.
Make sure your document is in Frame 7 format.

Regards, Wayne.
