Adobe Illustrator/Object Fill

Question
Hi Amy,

I'm using AI 9 on my PC. I just started with the program today, but cannot figure out how to make the Fill command work with imported graphics. Specifically, I created an image in Photo Shop Elements and want to change its color in AI 9. No matter what file type I import (EPS, PDF, TIFF, JPEG) the program will not allow me to change the image's color.

I am selecting a color from the color toolbar, clicking the Bucket icon and clicking the image. I've tried various combinations of the above and none work. I've also tried bringing in other images from the web and the same thing happens...

Do you think I ended up with a faulty program (I ordered it new online) or is there some setting that needs changed?

Thank you!

Answer
Hi Erin,

Unfortunately, you cannot fill imported graphics in AI. The fill tool is for filling vector objects you draw in Illustrator.

You can adjust the colors of a raster image (I have forgotten where the color adjustment command is located in 9, sorry!) but if you want to completely recolor something, you need to do that work in PhotoShop before placing the image.

Since 9, Adobe has been improving image manipulation capabilities within Illustrator. I have CS3, and there are many more options for working with imported graphics... however, you still cannot selectively recolor imported raster graphics. I guess if Adobe did that, fewer folks would buy PhotoShop!

Good luck, Erin!

Expertise

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
