Question
Hi
whenever i try to save something on Illustrator i get a message "unknown error has occured". However when I convert the fonts to curves, i am able to save the file. But till i don't convert them this message appears every time i try to save the file. This used to not happen before. I am using Illustrator CS2

Answer
Hi Helina.

Sounds like one of your fonts is corrupt or possibly your font cache is damaged.

1 - Quit AI and any adobe apps
2 - Locate all files on your computer named adobefnt*.lst and delete them. * is a number. Make sure you only delete .lst files.
3 - Restart AI.

These are font cache files that Adobe apps build and use when loading/starting up. They will be recreated as needed.

If the problem persists, there is probably a font in your system that is giving you grief. Sadly, unless you have a font manager application with diagnosis and repair features, the only way to figure out which one it is is to move all fonts out of the fonts folder and then put them all back in, in small batches. Between each batch, restart Illustrator and try to recreate the save error. When the error occurs, you know that the problem font is in the last batch you moved into the fonts folder.

Hopefully, though, the font cache fix will help you and you won't need to do this as it takes some time!

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
