Question
I have a shape, the handle of a pair of scissors, I want the hole in the handle clear so the background of my design shows thru., transparent. How do I do that? I have tried every way with masks and realize that isn't the right tool.

Answer
Hi Judy,
Here's what to do to to see through the whole of the handle:
1. create a circle (or oval)
2. create a 2nd circle that is smaller and put it on top of the bigger circle.
3. select both circles by pressing the "Shift" key and clicking one them.
4. Now that are both circles selected, make sure your "pathfinder" menu on the left side is visible. If you haven't used the pathfinder before and you don't know where it is, simply click "CTRL+Shift+F9" and it will show.
5.One of the small icons of the pathfinder reads "Subtract from Shape Area". It is the 2nd from left on the top row. Once you click it (make sure the circles are both selected), you'll get the effect that you wanted. You'll be able to see through the smaller circle.
6.If you want to change the position of the small circle, simply click on the direct selection tool from the tool menu (it's the white arrow which is 2nd from top", click on the small circle and drag it to where you want it.
7. If you're happy with the effect, select the circles (using the black arrow this time) and click on the button that says "Expand" in the "Pathfinder" which we just used. This command will make the effect permanent.
This is an easy technique that you'll be using a lot in designs. I put the instructions in details because I wasn't sure how much experience you have with Illustrator. I hope that they were clear and helpful.

Please let me know if you have any other question. I'll be happy to assist you further.
