Adobe Illustrator/Transparent Images

Question
Sorry for all the questions!
I have a logo saved as a JPEG file that I need to put into Illustrator. The problem is that it nees to go on top of an image and I need to make it transparent to get rid of the white background. Normally I would just do this in PhotoShop but I only have Illustrator, is there any way of doing it within Illustrator?

Answer
Hi Alison,

You can trace your shape using the pen tool in Illustrator, then select both the enclosed shape and your image and go to Object>Compound Path>Make. However, this only works on solid shapes, if you have a fading transparency or soft edge, Illustrator can't handle that.

Thanks
