Adobe Illustrator/Drop Shadow/Effects merge when Flattening layers

Question
Hello Amy,
I have a three layer design: one image layer, and two text layers.  I have
applied strokes and drop shadows to each of the text layers (Effect> Stylize>
Drop Shadow).
When I select "Flatten Artwork" from the Layers menu I lose the drop shadows
that were applied to each text layer and instead the shadow appears around
the outside of the entire image.
Is there a way I can set up the individual layers differently so that the effects
and appearances don't merge?  Thanks.  ;)

Answer
Hi KC,

I think I know what you're doing.

Instead of applying the effect by selecting a Layer in the Layers palette, select only the individual object (in your case, select only the text path or area text) and apply the effects to that object alone.

When you flatten your layers, everything will retain its own effects!

Let me know if this is helpful.

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.
