Adobe Illustrator/Drop Shadows/Effects merge when Flattening layers

Question
Hello Nick,
I have a three layer design: one image layer, and two text layers.  I have
applied strokes and drop shadows to each of the text layers (Effect> Stylize>
Drop Shadow).
When I select "Flatten Artwork" from the Layers menu I lose the drop shadows
that were applied to each text layer and instead the shadow appears around
the outside of the entire image.
Is there a way I can set up the individual layers differently so that the effects
and appearances don't merge?  Thanks.  ;)

Answer
Hi KC,
Without actually seeing the artwork and the results you are experiencing I would start with some different ways of merging the layers.

I will assume that your artwork appears as you desire it with your layer structure intact and I will assume you have a reason for flattening the artwork to a single layer.
Instead of "Flatten Artwork" try selecting the layers containing the text outlines and effects (click to select one of the layers in the layers palette and command click to add other layers to the selection). While these layers are selected try using the "Merge Selected" command instead of flatten artwork. Or try "Collect in New Layer".
Instead of flattening all the layers at once try doing 2 or three at a time and observe the results as you go. I would try starting from the top layers and merge or collect down until you achieve the results you  expect.
Please bear in mind that flattening layers and flattening transparency are not the same thing. If flattening transparency is really what you need I can direct you to some good sources of some very clear documentation.

I hope these suggestions get your artwork to where it needs to be.

Good Luck

Nick
