Adobe Illustrator/font problems

Question
When I open up an eps file in Illustrator CS2, the ≥ character turns into a "?".
The font is helvetica bold.  This also happens sometimes with the Arial font.
The characters that don't convert correctly are usually greek and certain
symbols like ≥.  However, when I open the same figure with in CS3 it's fine.
What causes certain characters (greek also) to turn to "?" in CS2?

Thanks for the help!

Answer
Hi Robin,

The only thing I can think of is that the Type Engine support for unicode characters is different in CS3 than it is in CS2 and there may not be a great solution for you.

Is the Helvetica bold a TrueType or Type1 font? That could be important.
I guess I'd need to know the history of the text, too.
Was the text placed or pasted from Word or typed directly?

Was the document created in CS3 or CS2 or was it output from another application altogether?

What happens when you open it in CS3, then save it to CS2 format? Does that work?
