Question
Hey Laith,
I'm creating graphics in photoshop and trying to transfer them over to illustrator so that I can use the cd booklet template and send the designs off to the printer.  The photoshop file is 300 dpi. 8 bit RGB color.  I've tried exporting with paths to illustrator, but still haven't nabbed it.

How can I open the file in illustrator for use with the template and still retain the original resolution and quality?

Thanks!
Jason

Answer
Hi Jason,
If you save your file as a PSD file you should be able to open the file in Illustrator without any issues with resolution and quality. You'll even be able to edit any paths you have in the PSD file. Just make sure that you select the option "Convert Photoshop Layers to Objects" which you will get when you open the file. Also make sure that you graphics has the right dimensions so that you won't have to scale them inside Illustrator. A 300 dpi file should be fine only if you don't enlarge it in Illustrator. If I were you, I'll only create the background in Photoshop and create everything else in Illustrator.

If you're still having issues, please tell me what file format you're using (PSD, JPG, Tiff?), what method are you using to put the file in Illustrator (i.e. "cut & Paste", "place" or "open")? what's happening to the file when you place it in Illustrator (why you think the file is loosing quality?).

If you like you can send me the files you're working with to imagedpi@yahoo.com and I will be glad to assist you further.

Best regards,

Laith
