Adobe Illustrator/Urgent Help with Document Sizing and Bleed

Question
I am using Illustrator CS3 to create a poster that is 24"x36".  The bleed needs to be 1/4" on all sides for printing.

When I create the document, do I set the size to 24.5"x36.5" to account for the bleed?  I know I can go to File>Print>Marks and Bleed to set the bleed to 0.25" on all sides, but in doing so, I am afraid it will cut off the 24"x36" sizing to make it 23.5"x35.5" in print.

What is the correct way of making sure I end up with a 24"x36" poster with color that goes all the way to the edge after printing?

The posters are due at the printers on Monday, March 31 so if you can reply as soon as possible, it'll be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

You are correct, you take into account the bleeds when creating your document. When you add trim marks and bleeds, it actually cuts into your document, assuming you have added the extra space.

24.5 x 36.5 is the proper size.

Thanks

Kevin
