Adobe Illustrator/illustrator compression
Expert: Tom Rouze - 3/4/2008
QuestionQUESTION: I have tried reducing files through exporting them in Illustrator but the quality of the file is sacrificed in the exporting. Is there a way to make an artwork file that is under 3 MB-ish aka small enough to email, but can also be used to print on a durst printer (about 400 dpi)?
ANSWER: Hello,
Depending on the original size of the file, the easiest thing to try is save as a PDF. When you choose this check the box called "preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities".
If this alone doesn't work, then we'll go into more compression settings. I'll address that if needed, there are a few options.
This usually works and most Printers use a PDF workflow.
Thank you,

QUESTION: Could we address more compression options?
AnswerHi Lain,
What is your file size? How large of a file can you email handle? This will determine our next step.
One option is, if you have photoshop images, to change the resolution of the image components in Photoshop first then bring them into Illustrator.
Second option is to link the images and send the file and supporting art separately. When it's opened on the other end they should have no problem relinking the images. This is probably the better option.
Another option is to use the PDF compression settings. Downsampling compression does always produce the best results. I try only to use it as a last resort.
There is compression software, Stuff It for MAC, or WinZip for PC, if you have them available.
I also came across a website a couple months ago that offers a free FTP site for file transfers. I'll try to find the info for you if you still need it. You set up an account and send an email with information on how to retrive the file.
Answer the two questions I had and we'll work on the next part.
Thank you,
Tom
