Adobe Illustrator/Network folder of Illustrator files freezes

Question
Our company's Marketing Department has a network file share consisting of approximately 600 Illustrator files. When opening this folder, Illustrator redraws the file icons to an Illustrator icon. Frequently, when a user opens this folder and then attempts to scroll down the list, the folder will go blank, freeze for a bit, then unfreeze back at the top of the list.

This only happens with persons having Illustrator installed. I've tested this on my machine and I can scroll freely up and down the entire list within the same folder. I do not have Illustrator.

Is there a preference setting which might be causing this activity? Is there anything else I should look at? I can definitely narrow this down to Illustrator.

Please help.

Answer
Hi Mike,

This is a server issue, not an Illustrator issue. What is happening is you have so many files in that folder, that your server cannot keep up with drawing previews of the files when people scroll.

That is also why people that dont have illustrator do not have the issue, they dont see the previews, they just see the blank doc. icons.
